EEMB 113 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Chytridiomycosis, Emerging Infectious Disease, True Frog
Document Summary
Introducing non-native fish: actually cause harm to local frog. Amphibians disappearing in protected area-> no one knew the cause. Then disease bd shows up-> switch his study to disease. Now, introducing the disease to zoo animal before introducing them to the wild. Threatened -endangered status extirpated from 70% of its range. Due to chytrid, habitat loss, fish, pesticides, mating with r. catesbeiana (invasive in ca)->create hybrid and the pure lineage is no longer there. Mass extinction: fast rate, large amount of species. Chytridiomycosis, habitat loss, climate change, chemical pollution, introduced species. Chytridiomycosis: emerging infectious disease caused by the fungal pathogen, batrachochytrium dendriobotidis, specific to amphibians. Oviparous (egg birth) , ovovivparous (produce eggs but retain them inside the female body until hatching occurs; live offspring are born), and viviparous (live birth and no energy connection after hatching) Include marine, freshwater and terrestrial places; 7 species of sea turtles only. Only tetrapod with shell that enclosed both pectoral and pelvic girdle.
