Mockingbird male sings a lot of songs for sexual selection. Long time to learn a lot of song-> been around for a long time-> successful-> good gene. Relative metabolic use between birds and mammals difficult to say because they have different bmr to body size scaling rates, so it would depend a bit on what taxa you paired- but some data coming up on this. Both ovaries and testes essentially disappear in non breeding season (~apple seed size) to be lighter. Shelled eggs largely externally incubated must protect from external threat while allowing gas exchange. Amount of yolk varies based on precocial/altricial nature of young. Precocial: young that are physically developed when it hatches. Testes size is correlated to social system and group size. Completing with other male"s sperm to fertilize a female"s egg. Birds are socially monogamy, but not genetically monogamy and many female cheats. But birds live 2-3 times longer than other animals.
