There was a lot we didn"t know about cancer before the war on cancer was declared in 1972. Cancer is abnormal cell growth by division-pathological hyperplasia. People realized radiation exposure from x-rays can cause cancer soon after the x-ray machine became well-known. Wrote about how cleaning out old time chimneys would have a high risk of causing cancer. People would do so naked, increasing the risk due to soot and unburned hydrocarbons. Soot wart: normally found on the scrotum, now known as a cancer growth/carcinoma. Would then spread to the abdomen and be quite fatal. He argued that the cancer was from frequent exposure to the chemicals in the chimneys. Mutation: a change in the genetic material. In 1946, herman muller was awarded the nobel prize in physiology for. Medicine, for the discovery that mutations can be induced by x-rays. These mutations would be passed on from children who were able to survive long enough to reproduce.
