Serotonin, ne, dopamine: inhibits reuptake, weak affinity for 5ht2a receptors so less hallucinogenic effect. Metabolite mda has more affinity: release oxytocin. No accepted medical use, but say we need more research. In rat and monkey experiments, mdma damaged serotonin-producing neurons that lasted 12-18 months after use. Many of the psychic effects are likely due to serotonergic activity, bit does not give visual hallucinations like most other psychedelics do. Overwhelms the synaptic vesicles and forces them to discharge their reservoirs of serotonin. After about 3 hours, e continues to urge vesicles to release even more serotonin, but serotonin. Often taken with other drugs like lsd and amphetamines to prolong the feelings. Can take week or more to produce sufficient amounr od seroronintto re-experience the same sensation. The serotonin receptors retreat down reg leads to more mood changed, some even depressed or suicidal. Can result in acute anxiety reaction, with flashbacks after use. Tolerance develops quickly if useiff lots use.
