FAMST 101D Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Redd Foxx, Ernestine Wade, Marla Gibbs
Document Summary
Clip: amos and andy: anatomy of a controversy (1983) Felt it was natural, hilarious, relatable, believable even though it was exaggerated in some senses. Also said it might not have been okay because it was the only representation of black people at the time, which then creates stereotypes But she suggested there should have been a balance of black representation. Ernestine wade also thought the show did no harm because the show was just supposed to be for entertainment purposes wasn"t meant to educate so it didn"t do much harm. Redd foxx: "you"re not hurting anyone" just for laughs also believed amos and andy cast paved the way for actors to come. They were representative of the black middle class who was educated and wished to be fully integrated in society. Hated the show because they felt that it put all blacks down (but their "evidence" was "wrong")
