LING 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Logogram, Fricative Consonant, Formant
Document Summary
1 period = 1 full cycle of wave. Rate of cycle = frequency: 1 hz (hertz) = 1 cycle per second. Higher frequency: = more cycles per unit of time, = interpreted as higher tone/pitch/note. Speech sound : not pure tones; regular (periodic) but complex. Energy source: vocal cords vibrating (as string of an instrument) Resonating in diff ways in different chambers in vocal tract. Spectrograms- 3d, reveal info about frequency & loudness. I = (cid:862)ee(cid:863) ; e = (cid:862)ay(cid:863) ; a ; o = (cid:862)oh(cid:863) ; u = (cid:862)ooh(cid:863) Assignment #3 due at end of this week. Final: 20 mc in class, take home fr we can do during week leading up to final. Cumulative in that there are many important overarching themes. Writing systems are a reflection of language. Arbitrariness: meaning is not an analog of form. Writing is technology- a set of tools & skills humans create & use. Each glyph (or letter) represents a phoneme.
