No: mapping of concepts to symbols differ across cultures concepts & symbols are independent, body, space, time: drawing of human body labeled/body parts; use 3d box or teapot to refer to body parts too (metaphorical extension) 4/11: written symbols are representations of speech not vice versa, empirical study of language: detection of patterns/structure; organization of symbols, cultural study of language: variance in convention.
