• Independent films
o If you don’t have a distributor
o If it is personal to director
• Films can be independent economically produced and distributed outside major systems
• Films can be independent
o Technologically
o Socially and institutionally
o Aesthetically- avant garde vs conventional filmmaking
o Politically
• In 90s, success of independently made films is consolidated
o Studios absorb independents or launch own in-house indie divisions
• Independent cinema
o Became less about where money comes from
o More about set of artistic criteria
▪ Character driven stories
▪ Idiosyncratic perspectives
▪ Conversations instead of special effects
o Independents have fewer access to theaters and so rely more on DVD for
distribution, seek alternative exhibition strategies
o Narrative
▪ In CHC- transitive action, linear, goal oriented, closure
▪ In Art Cinema- real locations, taboo subjects, mixed subjects (illusion vs
reality), vaguely defined goals, non closure
▪ In Avant garde- dream reality, non narrative, direct emotions
(expressionism)
