Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains - jean jacques rousseau. Monarchy: rule by a single person, a monarch. Natural rights: the right of nature is the liberty each man hath to use his own power as he will himself, for the preservation of his own nature; that is to say, of his own life. Legitimacy: the obligation of subjects to the sovereign is understood to last as long, and no longer, than the power lasteth by which he is able to protect them. State of nature: people are basically good, but live in fear because not everyone is. Natural rights: the law of nature - the god given and inalienable right to life, liberty, and property. Legitimacy: the reason why men enter into society is the preservation of their property . The only natural society is the family. Once able to care for himself, the children may return to nature as an independent agent.
