Document Summary

Keeping dewey, constant, cutting rawls justice as fairness for the syllabus. We have to engage in the business of governing ourselves. People are enslaved when they lose control over their own lives (any system other than democracy) Best possible life is the one that a society is free. 156 "man was born free, and everywhere he is in chains" Concerned about the idea that we"re being coerced in society. Condition of slavery itself, turns people into slaves. If you treat people like slaves, they develop a certain kind of consciousness that reflects slavery. Relationship between king and country (leader and subjects) is unnatural. 159 - king can do anything with this protective "authority" over subjects. Anything the body does, is the will of the people. Requires an alienation of rights from every individual - absolute and unconditional. You give up your right to life, property, family, etc. Only by giving up access to everything, that you gain everything.
