POL S 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Trait Theory, Machismo, Institute For Operations Research And The Management Sciences
Document Summary
For foucault, power means exercising knowledge and control over all of us at once. Not just simply an individual having control over another individual. Instead of focusing on freedom, we should focus on resistance. Tells us that politics/power and truth are always intertwined. Looking at the way power permeates and structures our society. Power concerns the way in which we conceptualize knowledge. The ways in which our knowledge changes in what we should highlight. Mostly how we choose different ways of thinking about things i. e. sexuality and punishment. Recognizing that all knowledge is a product of our historical moment. Truth isn"t an effect of correspondence, but always understood as an effect of power. What we concern to be true is because of how we understand ourselves. We don"t find truth in talking to each other and saying "hey, this book says ____ so it is true"
