Sympathetic adrenomedullary (sam) system - fast acting. Hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical (hpa) axis - slow acting. Hpa activation most likely for self-evaluative stressors where person doesn"t feel in control. Cortisol (stress response) is detected later after stressor is experiences. Cortisol - not in control, have to give a speech. Sees a bear and has to flee .
