PSY 124 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Lightning, Controllability, Achievement Orientation
Document Summary
Instructional implications - embed lessons within the context of larger projects that personally interest students. Display and model interest in the material: dewey"s theory of interest - willing attention is more effective for learning than forced effort. Interest causes students to pay attention and actively learn. It is absurd to suppose that a child gets more intellectual or mental discipline when he goes at a matter unwillingly than when he goes out of the fullness of his heart. Important that students are cognitively active rather than just physically active during learning: hidi & renninger theory of interest (individual interest & situational interest) Individual interest (you personally develop a curiosity of the material) Situational interest (we take a lesson and spice it up by doing things like wearing a costume that matches the lecture topic) If i fail, it"s because i didn"t try hard enough . Instructional implications: avoid condescending cues when a student fails.
