Document Summary

Worked-out examples (woe) - involves presenting a problem and a step-by-step solution: ex: 2x -5 = 5 solve for x. 2x = 10 x = 10/2 x = 5: three processes in analogical thinking. Issue: it"s hard to identify and remember the right problem: compare test performance of students who receive woes vs solve problems. Learning by doing - give students practice in solving equations and students continue on each problem until they get the right answer. Cooper & sweller: students who learn by doing took twice as much time to learn as students who learned from woe. Learning with examples take less time: more efficient and effective. Split source format vs integrative format **: students learn better with woes in integrated format than in split-attention format, split-attention format creates more extraneous cognitive processing. Renkl (2002) the problem: developed a computer program that presented problems, and provided step-by-step solutions.
