Document Summary
Two divided groups can develop stereotypes, and bringing them together will not absolve the stereotypes. We have a tendency to categorize into and to affiliate with groups. In-group = a group we belong to (us) Out-group = a group we don"t belong to (them) Arbitrary division of people into an in-group and an out-group. A research method in which participants are randomly divided into groups depending on certain arbitrary categories. Open vs close-toed shoes, overestimators vs underestimators, etc. Viewing out-group members as more similar to one another than in-group. In-group members liked and treated better than out-group. Prejudice = a hostile or negative attitude toward a group of people, based solely on their membership in that group. Stereotypes = a generalization about a group of people in which identical characteristics are assigned to virtually all members of the group, regardless of actual variation among members.
