●Canker sores dif- ulceration mouth
●Herpes 2 - mostly in genitals, but in mouth also
●In usa, 16% of people 14-49 yrs have herpes 2
●Herpes outbreaks cycles:
○Giant outbreak
○Followed by relaxed phase
○Outbreak
■Median = 6 outbreaks 1rst year, 3 outbreaks 5th year
●Triggers for outbreaks - sunburn, stress, foods, etc.
●No cure at present but 3 drugs help
●Anonymous notes letting partner know they might have an STD
○You can end up suing someone if a person knows he or she has an std and
doesn't tell partner
●Genital herpes
○1% of women and 1% of males at ucsb know they have genital herpes
●# of herpes outbreaks/yr
○1.6 for people taking acyclovir every day
○7.3 for people taking acyclovir only after outbreaks appear
●For pregnant women with herpes, to avoid passing herpes to the baby at time of birth
doctors can do a cesarean section
●If you have herpes, think positively,
○People who fear they can do little to control herpes have more frequent and
more negative recurrences, depressing mind and body
○Learn positive self statements
■“Herpes isn’t going to ruin my life”
■“I’m learning my triggers & getting control.”
●Support groups help too
●Herpes can get in the eye, can spread by touching genitals and then touching eye
●4. Hepatitis B
○Can be spread via sex.
