SOC 152A Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Birth Weight, Fertility Awareness, Extended Cycle Combined Hormonal Contraceptive
Document Summary
Women in the united states use iuds much less than other nations, and our teens have higher pregnancy rates, trapping poor teens deeper into poverty. Europeans wonder why we americans continue to do this (not use iuds). Modern birth control pills have much lower doses of synthetic hormones than did the early pills (60s and early 70s). The birth control pill is the most common form of hormonal birth control for women at ucsb. Cons of the pill: weight gain or loss (no studies that show this, but women report it), nausea, breast enlargement and tenderness, headaches, fatigue, and depression. The nuvaring is a small ring which is inserted deep into the vagina; the moisture and heat cause it to time-release hormones that inhibit ovulation. The hormones in the nuvaring are concentrated in the genitals rather than being spread over the whole body. The nuvaring is used for one month before changing to a new one.
