Document Summary

Compare size of events that release seismic waves (magnitude, moment) Determine orientation of faults and sense of slip. The pattern of ground shaking can determine the type of fault. From direction of ground motion far away tell orientation of fault and sense of shear slip. S waves can"t go into the core of the earth, p waves affected as well. Takes 20 minutes for wave at the speed of sound to travel through the center of the earth. Seismic tomography: by analyzing travel times of many waves, can locate the anomalous paths through the earth 3d models of velocity variations, not just radial layering. Rock is hotter = speed of sound is slower. Convection of hot rocks and cold rock keeps earth cool. And it will only get worse because of burgeoning population. Landslides, liquefaction, tsunamis, dam/highway/nuclear/chemical structure failures, fire, induced events. Liquefaction: buildings built on sand tipping over and sinking into the sand.
