In his scathing essay on photography, published in 1859, charles baudelaire argued that photography, as a new technology and medium, was a lazy-alternative for would be painters. He stated that photography was invafing the french art scene and was therefore a main contributor to the degradation of the artistic genius. Baudelaire insisted that photography focused too much on external reality, and did nothing to convey a man"s soul or dreams the true force and purpose of art.
