As a ield, focus is on process of change over ime. Two broad sub-fields: cogniive and language development. How babies and children think, learn to talk, remember, learn. How these processes change throughout the lifespan: social and emoional development. How we form relaionships with other people. How emoions are felt, expressed, understood throughout life. Do children and babies think in fundamentally diferent ways than adults: piaget: yes. Analogy: mental structures are like caterpillar to buterly: informaion processing theorists: no. Children are novices / they just know less but think in same ways (quanitaive change) Analogy: mental structures are like litle ish growing to big ish. Qualitaive change: there are stages to development that show major diferences, children think diferently. Quanitaive change: consistent growth, children think the same as adults, but know less.
