o The higher the K (the filtration coefficient), the more easily the fluid can move
out of the cavity
Kides hae higher K’s, the rai has a loer K
o The pressure decreases from arterial to venous sides because the blood is
slowing down due to resistance. This pressure gradient is what causes flow.
o Capillary oncotic pressure and interstitial oncotic is the same because the solutes
ail, alui is aitaied o either side eause it does’t ross the
apillar’s alls
o Interstitial pressure should be 0, unless there is fluid accumulation, like edema
o You want net filtration (positive value) on the arterial side and net absorption
(negative value) on the venous side
Lymphatic system
o Returns fluid and proteins to the circulatory system
o Serves as a filter for pathogens
Edema
o Is when here is disruption between the normal circulatory system and lymphatic
systems
o Two main causes
Inadequate drainage of lymph; obstruction of the lymphatic system (e.g.
due to parasites or cancers)
Filtration is much greater than absorption
Can happen due to increased hydrostatic pressure, due to CHF
elevated venous pressure

Or can be due to decrease in plasma protein concentration as a
result of malnutrition or liver failure the lier is’t able to
produce the necessary proteins like albumin)
An increase in interstitial proteins that sucks the interstitial fluid
into the interstitium
o Can have generalized or localized edema
