Action potential in the motor neuron and muscle fiber are fairly similar. The duration of a muscle twitch can be quite long (10-100msec) These twitches can summate (since they are so long) Have higher amounts of myoglobin (gives the darker color) Used in a constant and ongoing basis (postural muscles) **know the first and last column slow-twitch oxidative and fast twitch glycolytic. Amount of tension increases as the summations increase. Muscle fibers have an opportunity to relax a little bit, but not completely. A muscle twitch in a smooth muscle might last many many seconds (very long) Unlike skeletal and cardiac muscles (less than 1 second) Can be orientated in many directions (can change the shape of the organ) Actin is anchored to the dense bodies (in smooth muscle) Dense bodies are connected to each other via intermediate filaments. All myosin heads are oriented in the same direction in the skeletal muscle.
