Current is applied and dna molecules move from the negative electrode toward the positive electrode (nucleotides are negatively charged) Longer (slower) molecules closer to neg electrode & shorter (faster) molecules closer to pos electrode. Length of fragment (number of base pairs) Brighter bands = more dna (how many copies of the fragments there are) Want to isolate a fragment, purify it, work with it. Str analysis is commonly used for dna profiling: short tandem repeats (strs) are genetic markers used in dna profiling. Strs are short dna sequences that are repeated many times in a row at the same location.
