Linkage Worksheet
Learning objectives:
• to distinguish between repulsion and coupling
• to distinguish between recombinant and non-recombinant gametes
• calculate the changed frequency of gamete genotypes based on the linkage.
DeVries set up a dihybrid cross similar to Mendel (using true
breeding parents) and expected to see a 9:3:3:1 ration between the
progeny classes based on Mendel's principles of segregation and
independent assortment. (Assume that wild types alleles are the
dominant alleles)
1) What is the genetic nomenclature assuming these are dominant
and recessive traits?
2) From a linkage perspective, are the wild type alleles coupled or in repulsion in the F1?
3) DeVries' saw a significant difference in the
ratio he expected for these two genes in the Red
Campion genes. Although he did not know this
was because the genes are close together on the
same chromosome. This deviation from the
expected 9:3:3:1 ratio was due to the physical
linkage. Based on his data to the right, how
close are these gene in CentiMorgans?
4) If De Vries did a test cross of the F1 dihybrid to the parent with white flowers and smooth foliage,
what ratio of progeny phenotypes would he expect to see (Hint: Not the expected 1:1:1:1 ratio)?
