BILD 3 Lecture 19
5/16/2018
What is ecology?
o It is the scientific study of the interdependence of organisms and their
environment
o Approach it from three perspectives: descriptive, functional, and evolutionary
o Descriptive
Describes what you see in nature
Natural history approach
Cataloging organisms in a particular location, weather over time
What is the natural history of a particular habitat/ecosystem/place?
o Functional
Studies the dynamic responses of populations and communities to
immediate factors of the environment
Community structure, diet, behavior, predator/prey/parasitic interactions
o Evolutionary
Studies the historical reasons why natural selection has favored the
species compositions we now see in a particular habitat/ecosystem/place
Considers the organisms and their relationships as the product of
evolution
Biotic factors
o The living components that shape an ecosystem and that affect other organisms
Abiotic factors
o Non-liig copoets of a ogais’s eioet such as tepeatue, light,
moisture, etc.
o Climate and biomes
Climate
o Is the long-term, prevailing weather conditions in a given area
o Not the weather on a particular day
o The sun drives everything about the climate
o There is seasonal and latitudinal variation in climate
o Latitudinal variation in sunlight intensity: temperature differences result because
the su’s eegy is cocetated at the euato ad is spead oe a geate aea
at the poles
The su’s aig effect iceases fo the poles to the euato
o Eath’s tilt and its orbit create seasonal variation
o Latitudinal differences in solar intensity also establish global air circulation and
precipitation patterns
Water is conveyed through patterns of global air circulation
Has two key processes:
Warm air rises, but cools as it does. Cooler air falls
