BILD 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Beta Sheet, C-Terminus, N-Terminus
Document Summary
Usually switching out an amino acid doesn"t have a huge effect on the atom. Depends on which cell and what it changes into. Electrically charged side chains (acidic = negatively charged; basic = positively charged) Proteins are combined by peptide bonds between amino acids and carboxyl group. The start of every protein chain is the amino terminus and the end is the carboxyl terminus. The 3-dimensional folded form of a chain of amino acids. Have multiple subunits and each subunit is a polypeptide chain (held by non -covalent interactions) The majority of the interactions within proteins are weak non covalent bonds i. ii. Some proteins have disulfide bonds that hold protein together. The lack of protein folding can cause serious diseases like alzheimer"s and parkinson. Some protein hormones will be released in one part of the body and travel through the blood stream and affect another cell. Glucose goes through the cell through a glucose transporter.
