Nervous system interfaces with the hypothalamus, which then talks to the pituitary gland, pancreas: both endocrine and exocrine secretion. Low ca2+ causes secretion of pth (parathyroid hormone: pth raises blood ca2+ level, osteoclasts degrade bone matrix. Stimulates ca2+ re-absorption (kidney: high ca2+ in blood inhibits pth release, abnormally reduced somatic growth (dwarfism) can be consequence of decreased hormone secretion from the anterior pituitary gland (growth hormone). Iodine is added to table salt to help prevent deficiencies of an essential mineral needed for the proper function of the thyroid glands: pineal gland, secretes melatonin. Light -> melatonin release inhibited: dark -> high melatonin, older age: lower melatonin levels, adrenal glands (on top of kidneys, adrenal medulla.
