Functions of the cerebral cortex: no pain receptors on the brain itself, 4 major lobes of the cerebral cortex. Frontal: prefrontal cortex, decision making, personality, planning. Lobotomy: disconnecting the prefrontal cortex from the rest of the brain, terrible idea, thought it would treat mental "problems, motor cortex. Larger number of neurons per body part in this cortex, the finer the movement: ex: hands have large section of motor cortex, and therefore can be moved very precisely, broca"s area. Formation of speech: they understand perfectly (both written and spoken), can write their thoughts, but can"t produce words, temporal, auditory cortex, wernicke"s area, comprehending language, contains the hippocampus. Long-term potentiation: axon synapses become sensitized after receiving a high frequency stimulus, so that after the high frequency, even a low frequency stimulus will produce a high frequency response, parietal. Larger number of neurons per body part in this cortex, the more sensitive that part of the body: where you consciously feel sensations.
