Document Summary

Are seed plants that produce the reproductive structures called flowers which mature into fruits. Are the most widespread and diverse of all plants. A flower is a specialized shoot with modified leaves. Petals, which are brightly colored and attract pollinators. Can be carried by wind, water, or animals to new locations, enhancing seed dispersal. Angiosperms originated at least 140 million years ago: and during the late mesozoic (the age of the dinosaurs) the major branches of the clade diverged from their common ancestor. Pollination of flowers and seed dispersal by animals: are two important relationships in terrestrial ecosystems. Humans depend on seed plants for food, wood, and many medicines. Plant apparently arose from a particular group of green algae called charophyceans. The earliest groups (bryophytes) lack vascular tissue and are small. The gametophytic stage dominates the life cycle and reproduction requires a film of water for motile gametes to navigate.
