BILD 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: California Floristic Province, Ceanothus, Adenostoma Fasciculatum

• Mediterranean biome
o Warm, dry summers with wet, cool winters
o Are diverse, but threatened
o Cover aout 2% of the earth’s lad area, ut otai approiatel 20% of
named vascular plants
o Vascular plants found in MTEs include 26,000 endemic species
▪ Endemic= native to that area and only can live naturally in that area
o Fynbos of South Africa is particularly rich in species
o Think: birds of paradise
o Can be further broken up into provinces:
▪ California floristic province
• CA west of the deserts
• Includes portions of southern OR and northern Baja
• Variable with respect to climate, topography, geology, and soil
characteristics
• Compared to other parts of NA< the CA flora has high diversity
and 2000+ endemic
• SD County has more species than any other county in the nation
and more threatened species (e.g. birds, plants, etc.)
o Mediterranean shrub habitats are fire prone
▪ Mature chaparral <3m tall, closed canopy; individual shrubs can live for
decades
▪ Mature plants flower in late winter and early spring
▪ By summer, plants are highly flammable due to organic compounds they
produce
▪ Many species crown sprout after fire
• Fires help with the life cycle of plants, helps to clear the ground so
that annual plants that need more sunlight can mature and grow
▪ Wild fires are natural occurrences due to this
• Annual plants are often dominant following a fire
• Seeds are present in seed bank and germinate after fire
• Shrubs become prevalent as canopies grow and annuals are
shaded out
• Mature chaparral dominated by plants such as chamise,
manzanita, Ceanothus, and shrub oaks
• Four factors that determine a biome: rainfall, temperature, topology, and characteristics
of the soil (abiotic factors)
• Population
o Is a group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area and have a
chance to mate
