Secondary production of the primary consumers
o Is all the growth and reproduction is done by the primary consumers, which are
herbivores
o Only a small fraction of NPP is consumed by herbivores
o Only a fraction of what is consumed results in secondary production
Production efficiency
o Is the fraction of assimilated energy form food that is available to be transferred
up the trophic structure in the form of biomass (food for the next level of
consumers)
o
o It takes ore eergy to keep a edotheri aial’s ody teperature up,
whih is why it’s lower tha etothers
o
o Assimilation is what goes into biomass and respiration, not the total of what’s
consumed
Trophic efficiency
o Only a fraction of production is transferred from one trophic level to the next
o An order of magnitude of energy from production is lost at each level of
consumption
o Trophic efficiency ranges from 5-20%
o There is also a great loss of biomass as you progress up within a food web
