Possible start of colonization of land by plants (spores) When plants die, the carbon within the tree goes back to the atmosphere. In the carboniferous period, the dead plants with carbon could not be decomposed, so it stored up on the ground and became oil. Allowed for further exploitation of land by animals. Plankton are the base of the marine food chain. When the planktons die off, then the whole food chain also collapses. May have been caused by enormous siberian traps volcanoes.
