Document Summary

Warm air goes towards the equator and then goes up and circles back to the extremes of earth. Population: a group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area and have a chance to mate. Hot tropics cause evaporation, warm, wet air rises. Rising air cools and loses its moisture rains in the tropics. As moist air moves in off the ocean and encounters mountains, it flows upward, cools at higher altitudes, and drops a large amount of water as precipitation. On the leeward side of the mountains, there is little precipitation. As a result of this rain shadow, a desert is often present. Water has a higher specific heat than land or air. Biomes result in large part from how plants respond to climate, especially temperature and precipitation. Mediterranean biome is also called a scrub or chaparral biome.
