BILD 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Notochord, Northern Hemisphere, Chordate
Document Summary
Crustaceans, insects, spiders, mites, scorpions, horseshoe crabs, sea spiders, trilobites (extinct) All arthropods have an exoskeleton composed of chitin, jointed appendages, and segmented bodies. Insects are more diverse than all other eukaryotes combined. Echinoderms (7,000 species): sea stars, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, urchins and sand dollars, and sea lilies. Ecology: the scientific study of the interactions that determine the distribution and abundance of organisms. We approach the study of ecology from three perspective: How did the community of species evolve here vs. there. All three approaches are necessary to produce good ecological science that will help us to understand nature. Biotic factors: living components that shape an ecosystem and that affect other organisms. Climate: the long-term, prevailing weather conditions in a given area. The sun"s warming effect increases from the poles to the equator. Latitudinal variation in sunlight intensity: temperature differences result from how the angle of the sun relative to earth"s surface changes with latitude.
