Document Summary

Almost all different chemicals can be broken down into simpler substances. There is a classification of matter depending on its composition. Pure substance: substance that cannot be broken down into anything else by physical means. Element: substance that consists only of atoms with the same nuclear charge. That is, it cannot be broken down into any other substance. Compound: substance that consists of two or more elements, associated by chemical bonds. Mixtures: combination of different substances, that can be separated physically. Heterogeneous: its appearance, composition and properties vary throughout the substance. Homogeneous: it has uniform appearance, composition and properties throughout. There are two parts of a solution: the solute, in smaller proportion, while the other is the solvent. If the solvent is water, we call it an aqueous solution. Dissolution: a substance dissolves into another, leaving behind those that cannot. Magnetic separation: a magnet attracts metallic particles. Filtration: a liquid passes through a filter, but the solids are left behind.
