89% of preschoolers with sli require additional special ed. Estimates suggest 50-90% of children with sli complete compulsory education: access to services is an influential factor. 65% of adults with sli report extended periods of unemployment. 18% report that they have never been employed. In general: high levels of social anxiety, low numbers of friends, at greater risk for bullying, higher rate of co-occurring psychopathologies. E. g. depression: overrepresented in court and prison systems. Children with significant difficulty learning & using language in the absence of any known etiology, such as: mental retardation, hearing impairment, frank neurological impairment, social-emotional or behavioral disorders. Children whose language development lags behind peers in: form (morphology & syntax, content (size of lexicon & semantic relations, use (pragmatics & socialization, estimated prevalence in us : 7, persists into adulthood. Our working definition of sli may sound reasonably clear-cut, but in practice these children present with a range of language & cognitive processing difficulties.
