Autism: a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by impairments in social and communication development, accompanied by stereotyped patterns of behavior & interest. With new dsm-v - must include severity. Several disorders originally grouped under asd: autism. Deficits in 3 areas, diagnosed before age 3 (often cognitive deficits as well) Repetitive & stereotyped behaviors: high-functioning autism (hfa) Have average to above average intelligence (iq = 70+) Like autism, language delays are apparent early in childhood: asperger syndrome (as) Many people group as and hfa together: pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified (pdd-nos) High functioning with mild cognitive issues and/or language delay. Children whose language can"t be extensively examined because they are too young even though they show some signs of autism. Spectrum refers to both heterogeneity of asds and wide variety of functional ability. Loss of words the child was previously able to say. Problems following directions or finding objects that are named.
