COGS 17 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Superior Colliculus, Vestibular System, Proprioception
Document Summary
Semicircular canals, ampulla, otolith organs (detect tilt) Semicircular canals: rotation, each of the three canals respond to different directions of rotation. Hair cells (vestibular receptor cells) located in ampula at the base of the canals. Cilia of hair cells bent by flow of endolymph in ampulla, hair cells fire more or less depending on the fluid. Have spontaneous firing, in absence of input. When no rotation, hair cell releases a base rate of nt. Bend cilia one way, less nt released and vice versa. Hair cells embedded in the wall of this structure. Detect how much gravity is felt by each side by the level of fluid, whether or not it is tilted. Whichever angle you tilt, some otoliths will weigh down the cilia. Acceleration and deceleration have the same effect. Or superior colliculus (coordinates with visual motion info) Occurs when vestibular and visual systems are not coordinated as expected. Free nerve endings: pain and temperature receptors.
