Document Summary

Matrilineal and patrilineal principles co-existed--passed down lineages through daughters and sons. Many married couples resided in the home of the bride or even lived separately. One could have many wives in different locations. No rigid code of conduct such as chastity. Women were not subjugated, at least, not til the tokugawa period. Women could inherit land just as men. Tokugawa period created finalized roles for genders. However, influences as an in-law increases; age increases, so does power. Confucian gender ideology firmly established among the elite. Looked down upon if diverted from it. Many commoners didn"t care for what really happens. Women trained to accompany and entertain men. More freedom to do as they pleased. Freedom to run the way they wanted to. Didn"t matter who you were, just as long as you wealth. Writes about sexuality, focused on the erratic side. Noh" was most celebrated but now gone, replaced with kabuki.
