Can"t avoid complexity of development by invoking evolutionary causation. Nativist and empiricist debate has been reich and scholarly at times, nativist stories persist when supporting flawed studies. Mutually interacting independent dimensions of influences on phenotypic development. Development systems theory provides framework for asking questions about processes by which behavior and cognition develop and evolve triple helix - coaction of biological evolution, cultural evolution, ontogenesis. Polyphenism - irreversible environment-specific alternative phenotypes, usually morphological. Disconnected pathways from ear to auditory cortex. Eye reconnected to auditory cortex: reaction range. Genes set limits, environment determines where phenotype lies. Nuanced understanding about nature and nurture coaction: norm of reaction. Neither phenotype and variability encoded in genotype. Range of phenotypes produced represents samples from distribution of possible phenotypes. Rats either maze dull or maze bright.
