April 1839 slaves of amistad captured in sierra leone. Sold to portuguese then to spanish illegal @ 1817. Rebellion may have succeeded bc half slaves were in main hold and other half were on deck. Parallel rebellion creole uprising 2 yrs after 1841. Us pressured br to return the slaves to us and charged them with murder and returned them to their owners. Actual dispute was the right to collect damages not whether or not they were from africa (like the filmi) 1841 abolitionists and missionaries went to fort in sierra leone to establish a mission. 1879 cinque dies in sierra leone mission. Napoleonic wars weakened the metropole of sp so they moved outward to new world for new power. Massive population mixing encouraged rebellion against direct sp rule. Social darwinism- believed fittest societies would survive over time leading ot a gneral upgrading of world as a whole. Many revolutions in la also abolished slavery.
