People sought great achievements because they didn"t believe in an afterlife. Part of the reason there were so many epics about flashy heroes. Export greek culture through colonies and trade. Colonies originally have a connection to the mother city but eventually. Fundamental to the identity of greeks at the time. Where the loyalty of the people lied. Unified with other greek states when threatened by a larger, non-greek threat. Only then would they really identify as greek. Encouraged participation of people in public life. People were expected to take an active role in everyday life. Military service was part of public participation. The people voted to go to war and then went themselves. Greek citizen that chose to join the military and trained. All their gear and training was paid for by other citizens. The wealthiest people served with the poorest. Helped unify the polis since everyone was in it together.
