Military service was essential to political advancement. Carthage - based in the city of carthage (now the northern coast of tunisia) But more focussed on trade unlike rome. Wealth was the primary determinant of political mobility. Would use mercenaries instead of citizen soldiers. Carthage controlled most of northern africa, some parts of spain, and several major mediterranean islands. (sicily+sardinia) Broke out in the island of sicily.
