Mmw 13 lecture 4 expeditions in the ming dynasty. The mongol expansionist legacy for the ming dynasty. Mongol expansionist policy: not something that we typically attribute to chinese culture. Mongols changed this for a short period of time: khubilai khan"s naval invasion of japan. Put in place infrastructure for ship-building and use of maritime technology. Ming dynasty inherited a lot of the infrastructure: khubilai khan tried to invade southeast asia. Not successful due to different environment of the jungle: collapse of yuan dynasty beginning in 1320"s. Exhaustion of forces due to these expeditions. Tensions between chinese subjects and the mongols. Constant rebellions: establishment of ming dynasty mid 1300"s. Result of successful rebellion against the mongols. Back to a dynasty ruled by ethnic chinese. Continuation of expansion under ming emperor yongle (1402-1424: out and out militarist". Like the mongols, he had sent lengthy expeditions to vietnam. Spent a lot of time pushing nomads back into the steppes.
