Document Summary

Ernst mach reading: we construct a physical reality through our perceptions and what we can see/grasp from our senses. Therefore, perception comes first and many people agree with those around them about what they perceive: opening a space so we go forward with an awareness of a sense of reality that can be critiqued at any moment. Lej brouwer: life, art, and mysticism: mathematics founded on the principle of subjectivity, time is subjective. Van gogh: earlier than the period of expressionism: starry night: his subjective view of how he sees the night, sunflowers: suggestion of time passing. Gustav mahler (1860-1911: father-figure to the expressionist composers, composer and conductor, pushes german romanticism to extremes, emotional intensity. Schoenberg: austrian, partially self-taught as a composer, disciple of mahler, enormously influential, but never popular or successful in material or public sense, worshipped as a teacher, pioneer, path breaking innovations. Ex: gustav klimt (not expressionistic): the kiss, paint with gold is too beautiful.
