Document Summary

You only get a standing wave, with nodes and anti-nodes when the wave frequency is. The ear responds to sound by the distribution of vibrations in the inner ear along the length of the basilar membrane that excites hair cells. The maximum sensitivity regions of human hearing can be thought fo as a closed tube resonance of the auditory canal. The higher frequency sensitivity peak corresponds to the 3rd harmonic of a open-closed cylinder. When i make a string move up and down, i am forcing it to vibrate. Yet nearly every object will vibrate at a certain frequency which is known as the natural frequency. You can also attempt to force vibrations to an object at its natural frequency. When resonance occurs, the amplitude of vibrations will increase dramatically. The result will be constructive interference sometimes and destructive interference others. The time dependent interference causes alternations in loudness of the resulting sound wave.
