POLI 100H Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Natural-Born-Citizen Clause, Mass Media, Crystallization
Document Summary
Crystallization of political attitudes occurs at a young age. Political socialization: the process by which individuals gain their political attitudes and opinions. Challenging the top-down approach of political socialization. The traditional political socialization process is distinct for immigrants and native born individuals. Political socialization process differs for more recent immigrants when compared to immigrants entering the us in the 1990s. Challenge the class top-down model of political socialization process. Argue that the process is likely bi-directional. Because the children of immigrants living in the united states may have more experience and exposure to us politics than their parents, immigrant children may be a critical source of political information about the us within immigrant families. In addition, parents in immigrant families may be socialising their children to politics within a transnational context. Political socialisation in immigrant families may be a bi-directional process. This paper provides preliminary research on and raises important questions about how political learning takes place in immigrant families.
