Adolescence: transition period from childhood to adulthood (13/14 or start of puberty or high school) Def: the period of development ranging from puberty to independence. The beginning and end of adolescence is different in many cultures. Erik erikson"s stages of psychosocial development (don"t go past teenager) Children must establish a sense of being able to rely on the environment and caregivers to take care of them. Autonomy vs. shame and doubt (18 months 3 years) Children learn ways to be able to act independently from their parents without feeling afraid they will venture too far off on their own. Guilt (3-5 years) this is the play stage which children learn to express themselves creatively w/o fear they will engage activities that will get them in trouble. Able to be creative on their own. Adolescents establish a sense of who they are and develop commitments in the areas of work and values.
