PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Learned Helplessness, Cogito Ergo Sum, Max Wertheimer
Document Summary
Psychology: the scienti c study of behavior and mental processes. Behavior: what people do and why: mental processes: how people think & feel and what in uences it. Levels of analysis: biological in uences, psychological in uences, socio-cultural in uences. Bronfenbrenner"s bioecological model: microsystem = you, mesosystem = school, family, playground, macrosystem = attitudes & ideologies of culture. Cogito ergo sum (i think, therefore i am) Empiricist approach: knowledge should be obtained from careful observation (senses) Structuralism: introspection to reveal structure of the human mind/consciousness (not reliable/hard to test) Edward titchener later of cially established structuralism with wundt"s ideas. Studied higher mental processes (like language) through studying culture. Functionalism: understanding evolving functions instead of thoughts and feelings (relying on tangible evidence since it was more testable) Behaviorism: environment is the main stimulus (easily observable & more scienti c) Structuralism is too narrow and functionalism didn"t go far enough.
