PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Auditory Cortex, Peripheral Nervous System, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Central nervous system (cns) - composed of the brain and the spinal cord: protected by bones, meninges, and cerebrospinal fluid, contains tens of billions of neurons, the brain: 3 bulges : left and right hemispheres and the brain stem. 3 main operating regions: brain stem, subcortical structures, and cerebral cortex: brainstem involved with basic actions. Cerebellum balance, motor coordination: subcortical structures. Hypothalamus: hunger, thirst, aggression, body temperature, mood, sex, hormones. Nucleus accumbens: addiction and reward center: cerebral cortex. Interprets information from the eyes and movement of objects. Integrates sensory information, spatial sense, navigation, language processing (to a certain degree) Contains the auditory cortex and the secondary visual cortex. Several problems in the temporal lobes can lead to disabilities in understanding or making language. Involved in planning, behavior, attention, and judgement: neurons. Axon terminals transfer signals from one neuron to another.
